Sophia
Just as the announcement for departure ended I glanced at Isla. She looked disturbed but I knew better than to ask her. She's always been more of a listener than a speaker and she was closer to Iris in comparison to me. I didn't mind though.I sat on the aisle side as Isla sat in the middle and Iris on the window side.
I smiled at Isla as I said "Hey girl! How have you been, long time no see"
she replied with a slight smile "indeed, great to meet you and just work you know"
"I know" I then saw that Iris turned towards us.
"It's amazing that we'll finally get to catch up"
"Hey do you guys remember the time when you kicked the ass of a guy insulting me?" That earned me a smile from Isla and an almost chuckle from Iris
"How could we forget" they said in unison and chuckled.
It really has been a long time since we all got back together like this and I'm really counting on this weekend. At the same time though, I'm getting this weird feeling, it's like some sort of indication of something bad. And not something like bad weather or me forgetting my headphones. Something really bad. And my intuition has always been good, in all these years it has never failed me. I really hope that for the first time my gut is wrong. This trip is something all of us deserve and I do hope that it isn't ruined.
Just as I was consumed with these thoughts I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned to see Liam. He sat on the aisle side as Ethan sat beside him.
His eyes met mine with a concerned look as he asked "Soph, everything fine?"
My face relaxed as I replied "Yes L, don't worry"
"You sure?" he asked to which I said "Yeah, I was just...thinking"
He just nodded in response and patted my shoulder "Don't think too much, alright?"
I nodded with a slight smile.
"Hey Ethan" I said waving at him
"Hey Sophia" he smiled back
"good to see you" he said, i smiled and replied "same here"
He seemed disturbed, like something was wrong. I shrugged it off and then drew my gaze away from him as I pulled out my phone, putting it on flight mode.
"Hey guys!" I was almost asleep when Claire's voice drew my attention towards her and my surroundings. Isla looking out the window, Iris's gaze on the magazine in her hands but I knew her enough to tell that she was alert, Ethan seemed distracted, Liam was looking at me which made me smile, Carl was looking right at her clearly waiting for her to continue.
"What?" Carl asked and I was curious to know too.
"Guys I'm bored" she finally said. She wasn't usually a person to randomly say things like that. I was sure she wasn't done talking. Just as I predicted she continued a moment later "Let's play a game"
That earned her a smile from me.
"Yes, I'm bored too" I said which in turn earned me a smile from her.
"But what?" Ethan asked.
"Truth or dare?" Carl suggested but before any of us could say something Liam said "But we can't do dares, we're in a moving flight"
I nodded in agreement "What about 2 truths and one lie?" I suggested
"Yes, let's play that" Claire smiled.
"What's that?" Isla asked, finally speaking.
"It's just like its name really. The person will tell 2 truths and a lie about themselves and the rest have to guess the lie"
I explained enthusiastically. She nodded in response. "So, who's in?" I asked no one in particular.
"Me" Carl said looking excited, Claire nodded, indicating that she was playing, Liam smiled, Ethan said "me", he was playing too. Isla also agreed to play to my surprise and Iris hadn't spoken once in this entire conversation. "Iris?" I asked, looking at her, she didn't respond and for a minute I thought that she wouldn't but a moment later she shrugged as if saying 'whatever' So, everyone was playing, great.
"I'll go first," I said excited about this whole game.
"Ok so, one, I'm scared of certain reptiles" I took a pause and then continued "two, I know how to ride a horse and three, I love writing notes for people" I then waited for everyone to say their answers.
Isla guessed that the horse one was a lie, everyone but Liam and Iris guessed the same. Both of them gave the same answer and even said it in unison "You aren't scared of reptiles, that's a lie"
I smile "looks like we have 2 winners" Liam smiles at me while Iris half smiles too. They know me too well.
Ethan, Liam and Claire had their turns, and Isla and I scored a point each, Iris scored two. The rest had their turns too and we ended up with a tie between me and Iris. Next went Claire as a tiebreaker. I scored the point, winning but didn't seem like Iris cared at all and knowing her, she really didn't.
My thoughts drifted to our childhood. How great it was. Us together. Me and Isla. I knew that things weren't really great at her home but she was still different. Very mature for a child that age but still she was different. A disturbed child but always carefree around me. And I finally saw her completely happy. All those years later. In college. But then, after what happened with em. She's never been the same. She might pretend but I know her. I know my best friend. We aren't best friends for nothing. But I know asking her will do nothing. So I don't. I try to ignore it. Brush it off. Even after how bad I want to ask her. Talk to her. Want her to talk to me. To share it all. Everything.
My thoughts came to a halt as something in the game drew my attention and I sighed. Then smiled, I wish things get better, for her.
After the game, most of them slept while I talked to Iris and Isla. Not long later I slept too, feeling tired. Soon enough, we'd reach the airport and enjoy this vacation. As I thought about it I felt ecstatic but at the same time I couldn't push the feeling away that something bad, terrible, was bound to happen soon enough.
